Talent Social

You are one of several billion people in the world. From another perspective, if you live in the UK you are one of 60 million. Stats wise, if you want to be found, the odds are against you, but the truth is they are not. Thanks to the web, you can now easily be found.

Welcome to the world of microbranding.

Ask yourself some important questions

Who are you? What are you looking for? Why should people care?

Can you write that in a few sentences? Can you say it in under a minute?

Can you be found online?

What happens when someone searches for your name? Your main talents? Or perhaps a strange mixture of your name and skills…?

Findability Tips

Get a domain

Your own name as a domain name is always useful to have, or perhaps you have a name you would like to develop into a microbrand. If you are in it for the long run, it’s better to own your own domain. There are free services from the likes of Typepad or Wordpress where you can get a free blog within their subdomain (e.g. yourname.typepad.com). Free services are all good, the problem though is that you are building up a history on a domain that you may want to move away from in the near future.

Think longterm

Whichever name you choose, think long term. Even if you don’t have any initial plans to develop a website, getting something basic up with a few words about yourself and contact details would not do you an harm.

Networking

Don’t be shy and get networking. This could be on or offline. Make worthwhile contacts, stay in contact. Identify, join or create worthwhile communties. On the larger scale are the likes of LinkedIn. With Ning becoming popular many niche communities are popping up all over the place. If one doesn’t exist perhaps it is an opportunity for you to start one.

Write something

Google are not the only ones who like content, so do people! The more useful things you write the greater chance you have of being found. It can take a while to find your voice and getting regular readers, but could be the proof that you love what you do.

Flipping it

Of course, all these tips could be flipped - as an organisation are you adopting the web? Are you using the tips mentioned? Surely life would be easier if the top talent out there were hunting you down and wanting to work with you.
