Anybody been watching The Secret Millionaire?

For those that don't know, The Secret Millionaire is a programme where a rich person goes to a deprived area undercover as a 'normal person' to identify people and projects to invest into.

The more I think about it, the more I relate The Secret Millionaire as a Talent Finder.

They find people who are passionate about what they are doing, have the drive and commitment to make a difference and are great at what they do - often gaining a lot of respect from the local community. What drives these people is to make positive change, not money. Though the surprise offer of money has never been rejected.

Ashoka has been doing a similar thing. For almost 30 years they have hunted the world for people with the drive and talent to succeed in making social change. Over the years they have found and invested in over 2,000 entreprenuers.

What can the Talent Management world learn from this?

It strikes me that organisations struggle to find the talent with true passion, motivation and commitment. Could it be that they are looking in the wrong places?

I'm no expert in recruitment, but from my personal experience as a job hunter and dealing with recruitment agencies from an employers perspective the system seriously lacks the human factor. It's all seems to be about searching and matching keywords in a CV.

I don't expect organisations to look specifically in deprived areas for talent, but I would love to see people get more involved with their (local) community. There are always talented people eager to please if they are given the opportunity - though with CVs opportunities are usually not given without prior experience (or keywords).

Of course, this not only applies to organisations. People themselves should also be encouraged to participate in (local) communities.
